On the latest season of The Bachelor, winner Susie Evans introduced Clayton Echard to her hometown in the 757 area. As a former beauty queen, Susie has been recognized for her beauty, kind heart, and loving soul. But the hometown episode showed us another side of Susie—her feisty side. Featured on the episode was the gym Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu located in Newport News. We were flattered to be acknowledged and hope that Susie’s relationship with Jiu-Jitsu has inspired others to try out the sport as well.
You know her as Susie Evans, beauty queen, and The Bachelor winner. At Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu, we just know her as Susie. Susie Evans is a 28-year-old photographer/videographer located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2011 she was crowned Miss Virginia Teen USA and in 2020 she was crowned Miss Virginia USA.
In 2022, Susie Evans was introduced as The Bachelor contestant. And now, we know her as The Bachelor winner. But underneath all of these accolades and recognitions, Susie is also a dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete.
Outside of being a beauty queen and her appearance on The Bachelor, Susie Evans has been training in Jiu-Jitsu for the past few years. On the hometown episode of The Bachelor, Susie introduced Clayton to this sport stating, “I started training Jiu-Jitsu in Japan, and I think it changed my life. I used to struggle a lot with body image, and I feel like, training Jiu-Jitsu, I see my body as a weapon.”
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport. It focuses on gaining the necessary skills to wrestle your opponent to the ground and assert dominance through chokeholds and joint locks. On the hometown episode, Susie introduced Clayton to one of Jiu-Jitsu’s beginning moves—shrimping—and demonstrated her Jiu-Jitsu abilities. Shrimping is a great warm-up exercise that moves the hips and is an excellent escape technique for later maneuvers. Besides being a great workout, BJJ allows you to feel more confident in your body and your self-defense abilities.
Susie’s dedication to the martial art Jiu-Jitsu is admirable. And while Jiu-Jitsu can seem daunting at first, it is a very accessible sport for people just starting out. With a little help from professionals, you can feel more confident in your self-defense abilities and discover a great workout. Take each technique step-by-step and soon you will be able to put Clayton in a chokehold too.
