The Breakaway Jiu Jitsu studio is becoming a happening place in the Hampton Roads area. Not only are the instructor’s experts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), but they constantly strive to keep their training fresh and up to date. Continued improvement in their own personal BJJ journey makes for more comprehensive training for their students in the long run.
Breakaway Jiu Jitsu instructor Rob Murianka recently competed in a BJJ NoGi tournament in Philadelphia, bringing home a Gold medal! This isn’t his first win, though. He is constantly winning BJJ tournaments alongside his students as he encourages them to train as well.
There are 2 common types of BJJ tournaments:
• Gi
• NoGi
In Gi events, you must wear a kimono or Gi uniform. During this type of match, grappling is still the method of combat, however you can grab the clothing of your opponent, as they are allowed to grab yours.
In NoGi events, the clothing rules are just as strict, but you wear tighter fitting clothing (shorts, shirts, and a rash guard, if you wish). During the NoGi match, you are not allowed to grab your opponent’s clothing.
When training for BJJ competitions, it is suggested that you learn both methods of combat, but with the increased interest in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), NoGi training is becoming the more popular of the two.
If you think you would be interested in this kind of competition, or just BJJ training in general, give us a call at (757)223-0373 and take advantage of the free class we offer at Breakaway Jui Jitsu.
